Knitting and crochet are enjoying a renaissance as artists reinterpret and liberate them from their traditional forms to create new bodies of work now being shown in galleries and museums internationally.  This slide talk will cover some of the recent amazing work by established and emerging artists who are helping to change the landscape of fiber art as well as include images from Sloane’s own work.

Knitting Wired: Exploring Wire Jewelry
Expand your fiber horizons and get wired!  An introduction to knitting and crocheting with wire, this workshop will cover resources, materials and design ideas for successful wire knit and crochet, getting students started on basic techniques using beautifully colored art wire.  Beginning with bracelets, the class will cover adding beads and found objects to the work as participants create delicate and unusual artistic jewelry.  Students will have the opportunity to execute pieces of their own design. Previous wire or jewelry making not required but basic knit or crochet skills necessary.

Knitting Wired: exploring wire sculpture
This hands-on class will get students hooked on how versatile and exciting wire is as a medium and will entice them to explore it further.  Using basic knit and crochet skills, participants will design their own small sculptures in beautiful colored wire adding beads and other found objects to make unusual and interesting pieces.  The class will cover different approaches to creating stitches as well as resources, materials and design ideas.  Previous wire work not required but basic knit or crochet skills necessary.

KNITTING WITH WIRE MASTER CLASS
Expand your knitting horizons and get wired!  Wire is a wonderful, flexible medium to use to make delicate and interesting jewelry.   In this class we'll cover the basics of working with wire and make beautiful but simple pieces that can also be embellished with beads.  The class will cover resources and materials and various techniques for successful wire knitting and crochet.

Straw into Gold: Knitting Wire Jewelry
This class will use knitting fundamentals to create various shapes while taking advantage of knit’s natural tendencies.  Working with a broad range of beautiful colors of copper wire, students will problem solve and manipulate stitches to integrate their ideas and create their own designs.   New techniques to create knit structure will be introduced and participants will end up with a luscious array of interesting jewelry.  Participants must be proficient in basic knitting techniques; although previous wire work not necessary.  Knowledge of crochet is also helpful.

Knit Anything - Not Clothing
Explore contemporary knitting and expand your vision of what a little knitting can do.  This class in 3D knitting will help participants develop a personal language of forms through exploring and using knitting fundamentals to create shapes while taking advantage of knit’s natural tendencies.   By manipulating stitches and experimenting with unconventional materials, participants will problem solve using a variety of vessels and forms.   We will talk about different ways to create shape and stability.   Techniques such as short rowing and I cords will be introduced.  A slide show of artists who use knitting techniques as a means of creative expression will be shown for inspiration.  This is a process rather than product oriented workshop.  Participants must be proficient in basic knitting techniques.

Knitting Wired: Wandering the Garden of the Knit Muse
This class will use knitting fundamentals to create various shapes while taking advantage of knit’s natural tendencies.  The class will cover a variety of approaches to creating stitches as well as resources and materials.  Working initially with a broad range of beautiful colors of copper wire, students will problem solve and manipulate stitches adding beads or other found objects integrating their ideas and designs in an array of jewelry and small sculptures.   Participants will later work with heavier gauge wire in a larger sculptural format.  A slide show of artists who use wire knitting techniques as a means of creative expression will be shown for inspiration.  Basic knitting proficiency required although previous wire work not necessary.
