Explore contemporary knitting andexpand your vision of what a little knitting can do. Over the course of this class, participantswill develop a personal language of forms by experimenting with knittingfundamentals to uncover the enormous possibilities of three dimensionalknit. By manipulating stitches and solving knitting geometry,participants will learn to ‘think knit’. We will explore the use ofnon-traditional materials and cover a range of dimensional techniques to helpcreate shape and stability while also taking advantage of knit’s naturaltendencies. Techniques for creating protrusions and bulges as well asshort rowing, random pickups, ruffles, knit painting, and tubular structures willbe introduced. A slide show of artists who use knitting techniques as ameans of creative expression will be shown for inspiration. We will alsoaddress the ways in which knitting has recently exploded into the public spacethrough the current international wave of guerrilla and graffitiknitting. This will primarily be a process oriented workshop, withone on one instructor time to discuss future sculptural projects. This newknitting vocabulary is also applicable to those interested in wearable art.

Also make sure to also visit the Museum Rijswijk's site for information on the Textile Biennale 2011. A grand time was had by all. After all, who doesn't love Indonesian food, to say nothing of Great Textiles.

Museum curator Deborah Corsini says, “Primary Structures, our second major exhibition of art knitting and crochet, examines the creative versatility of these simple techniques and its metamorphosis into a powerful and significant art.” With work ranging from the architectural to graphic abstractions, from pioneers and established artists as well as contemporary emerging artists, the upcoming exhibit scheduled for continues to showcase the emergence of sculptural art knitting as a 21st century medium of imaginative and cutting edge artistic innovation.

Use knitting fundamentals to create various shapes while taking advantage of knit’s natural tendencies. Learn a variety of approaches to the creation of stitches and usage of various materials. Manipulate a broad range of beautiful colors of copper wire, integrate beads or found objects, and problem solve to create an array of jewelry and small sculptures. Later, work with heavier gauge wire in a larger sculptural format and let your muse guide you to a new level of creativity. Basic knitting proficiency is required.

Develop a personal language of forms by experimenting with knitting fundamentals to uncover the enormous possibilities of a three dimensional knit. By manipulating stitches and solving knitting geometry, participants will learn to 'think knit'. The class will explore the use of non-traditional materials and cover a range of techniques to help create shape and stability when working in three dimensions. Your new knitting vocabulary can be applied to sculptural or wearable creations. This is a process-oriented workshop, with time devoted to making samples and experiments as you learn each technique or concept. Time will be set aside for the teacher to individually discuss with students their ideas for future projects. Participants must be proficient in basic knitting techniques; knowledge of crochet is also helpful.

Student Supply list:

Bring knitting needles in different sizes, including double pointed needles, crochet hooks, scissors, tapestry needle and a notebook. Students should bring unusual “linear elements” for experimental knitting which could include (but is in no way limited to) raffia, twine, fabric strips, plastic or wire. Students should also bring a reasonable amount of light colored, plain (not slubby) yarns in 2 colors for an ongoing sampler. If you have other materials that you would really like to explore, make sure to bring them with you.

Expand your knitting horizons and get wired! Wire is a wonderful, flexible medium to use to make delicate and interesting jewelry. In this class we'll cover the basics of working with wire and make beautiful but simple pieces that can also be embellished with beads. The class will cover resources and materials and various techniques for successful wire knitting and crochet.

Wireworking or jewelry making skill not required but basic knit and crochet skills necessary.

Materials list

Please bring size 2-5 knitting needles and similar sized crochet hooks. However, if you prefer to work either smaller or larger, make sure to pack appropriate sized tools. Double pointed metal needles are only 7” and thus easier to knit with. Bring jewelry pliers and wire cutters if you have them though this wire is fine enough to use scissors, if needed. If you would like to incorporate beads into your work, it would be best to bring them. Also, this can be fine work so bring magnifiers if you use them. Extra spools of wire will be available for purchase from instructor as needed.

Interface is an exciting exhibit of cross disciplinary work in Omaha at

the Hot Shop Arts Center October 1-30

for which my work combines glass and fiber techniques.

This show is being mounted in conjunction with the

12th Textile Society of America's Symposium in Lincoln,
Nebraska October 6 – 9, 2010.

My work has also been juried into
the Maryland Federation of Art's upcoming show: Fiber Options: Material Explorations
in Annapolis, MD, October 28 - November 28, 2010.

But the best part, of course, was the wonderful people I got to work with, to say nothing of the richly draped textile studio and library we got to work in...

I'm just back from my first Convergence, the biannual Handweaver's Guild of America conference where I taught different four workshops over the four conference days with 75 participants going through my door.....Whew!!....

Unaware that there would be a leader show,

I also entered a piece in the exhibit, Eye Dazzlers,

but can't complain as juror, Wendy Weiss gave it

the HGA Award awarded

'in recognition of a work demonstrating

outstanding creativity and craftsmanship

in the Fiber Arts.'

Bombing at Split Rock

Split Rockers had fantastic ideas about yarn adornments for sculptor Peter Woytuk's giant bronze bulls resting in a quiet corner of the St. Paul campus mall (after all, what's up with bulls outside a dairy building??)

but it was really all we could do in a week to get to all the knitting we wanted to do together.

SO....We, I should say, they, yarn bombed more locally making quite sure not to get caught.and on both campuses too....

But we really knew we were with our People

when we saw

When Laurinda came into my Metalwerx class and

told me on the first day that she had

never knit before,

I must admit that

I worried

but just look at the great results!!!

Thanks for your patience and persistence in teaching me how to knit with wire. I am sure that my 'lack of knitting skills' i.e. never knitted in my life!.....presented a unique and amusing experience for you in this class. I am so happy that you succeeded in teaching me. I intend to use this technique in my metal sculpting and who knows what else! The other barrier I have never overcome is learning how to swim...how about it?

Quiet Revolution: Knitting and the Political Landscape
June 13-18, 2010
Maybe Mme Defarge* was on to something. Within the framework of its recent renaissance, knitting has been more widely used as a medium of creative as well as political art. Experimenting with non-traditional materials and using knit in non-conventional ways, this class invites participants to explore sculptural knitting as an expressive art form with a focus on how to create meaning and message. By manipulating stitches and solving knitting geometry, participants will learn to ‘think knit’. The class will cover a range of dimensional techniques to help produce shape and stability as participants execute their ideas. We will examine the work of other knit artists and discuss what works and why. We will also discuss the ways in which knitting has recently exploded into the public space through the current international wave of guerrilla and graffiti knitting. Participants must know basic knitting techniques and be interested in engaging in a lively dialogue on the world around us while working on their own pieces.

In Charles Dickens’s A Tale of Two Cities, Madame Defarge secretly knit a register of the names of the revolution’s intended victims.

Techniques such as short rowing, protrusions and bulges, random pickups, ruffles, knit painting, and tubular structures will be introduced. A slide show of artists who use knitting techniques as a means of creative expression will be shown for inspiration. We will also address the ways in which knitting has recently exploded into the public space through the current international wave of guerrilla and graffiti knitting. While this will initially be a process oriented workshop, there will be opportunity to work on specific sculptural projects to innovatively incorporate these new ideas as well as design future sculptural projects.

Participants must be proficient in basic knitting techniques. Knowledge of crochet is also helpful.

Quiet Revolution: Knitting and the Political Landscape

Maybe Mme Defarge* was on to something. Within the framework of its recent renaissance, knitting has been more widely used as a medium of creative as well as political art. Experimenting with non-traditional materials and using knit in non-conventional ways, this class invites participants to explore sculptural knitting as an expressive art form with a focus on how to create meaning and message. By manipulating stitches and solving knitting geometry, participants will learn to ‘think knit’. The class will cover a range of dimensional techniques to help produce shape and stability as participants execute their ideas. We will examine the work of other knit artists and discuss what works and why. We will also discuss the ways in which knitting has recently exploded into the public space through the current international wave of guerrilla and graffiti knitting. Participants must know basic knitting techniques and be interested in engaging in a lively dialogue on the world around us while working on their own pieces.

THE KNITTED CONVENIENCE
On Saturday August 8th in Taylor Square, Sydney Australia, a team of lavatory assistants, urban knitters and crocheters descended on the heritage listed amenity on Oxford St to reclaim it back into the public eye blurring the lines between graffiti, art, and the role of knitting in a contemporary world.

Sydney guerrilla knitter, Denise Litchfield, organised that Taylor Square’s historic public amenities be covered in knitted pieces. After the event the installation will be unstitched, washed and made into blankets for local Sydney charities.

For a bit of proof that this is acutally happening in Australia,
here is the Sydney Opera House on a nice spring morning.

Using a sweater past its prime from your closet (or if you can't part with one of your own buy an old wool sweaters from a second hand store) then rearrange, appliqué and otherwise update it to suit your imagination. Sweaters can get a new life through creative embellishment including collars, cuffs or other whimsical additions. Accidentally felted sweaters are a plus. This is a class of creative ideas to reclaim old sweaters; a great way to incorporate leftover yarns, so bring yarns in a variety of textures and colors to use and share. Some sewing and crochet knowledge is helpful.
